The Sound Mind Sound Body Camp has been one of the highlights on the summer camp circuit for Detroit-area high school football players for the last five years, but the competitiveness of the camp has attracted Division 1 football prospects from across the country.
“We will have about 70 kids here at the camp who have Division 1 offers,” reported camp director Curtis Blackwell. “We started off as a city camp for Detroit Public School kids, to now being, arguably, one of the top camps in the country. I think that’s pretty awesome.”
Prospects from as far away as Arizona and Virginia have signed up for the Sound Mind Sound Body Camp, which will take place Thursday and Friday at Wayne State.
Several Rivals.com Top 250 prospects will be in attendance, including Saginaw wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett; Cleveland offensive lineman Aundrey Walker; Ft. Wayne, Ind., running back Remound Wright; Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Delonte Hollowell, and Highland Park athlete Raymon Taylor.
Additionally, Michigan commit Shawn Conway of Birmingham Seaholm as well as Michigan State commits Taiwan Jones of New Baltimore Anchor Bay and Onaje Miller of East Lansing will attend. The majority of prospects in the state of Michigan who hold Division 1 offers are scheduled to participate.
The high number of top college prospects expected to attend also attracts college coaches from college programs in Michigan, the Midwest and beyond. More than two dozen college programs are sending coaches to the event, with Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio, Eastern Michigan head coach Ron English and Wayne State head coach Paul Winters among the scheduled speakers.
Although the Sound Mind Sound Body Camp is attracting more high school football players of a higher caliber, its mission has not changed. Football instruction and competition is still interspersed with academic and life skills instruction.
“Our No. 1 thing is we know athletics is not what prevents these kids from going to the next level,” Blackwell said. “We push these kids, and (tell them) this is not just a fun camp, it is a work camp. If you want to know what it takes to be a student-athlete, this is the camp to come to. You’re going to get instruction from college coaches, you’re going to get academic, life skills and athletic activities throughout the day. For a kid, this is going to be a grind.”
The Sound Mind Sound Body Camp still has available spots. Those looking to register or learn more can go to http://smsbcamp.org.

About 400 to 500 high school football players from around Michigan, Virginia and Ohio spent the past two days engrossed in a football camp at Wayne State University.
Sound Mind, Sound Body Football Academy, hosted by San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, is meant to teach these young men that there is more out there than they realize.
Gates, a Detroit Central graduate, has come back to his hometown the past two years to try to teach young men that their football career does not have to end after high school, but that it can be so much more than football.
Gates told me that it is about giving them structure, discipline, and the mental capabilities to help them succeed on and off the football field.
He realizes that all of these young men will go through adversity. He has struggled and made poor choices in life, but he's figured out how to make his life better today than in the past.
Gates brought in coaches from all over the area, including University of Michigan head football coach Rich Rodriguez, Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio, to talk to these guys about getting good grades, not just about where to line up in a 4-3 defense, or a blocking scheme for the offensive line.
Gates also brings in other people to discuss topics like HIV and drugs, something that these young men might not understand at this age, but need to be aware of.
Gates says the quicker someone like him can get involved in a young man's life, doesn't guarantee him success, but it can help. Gates learned from his mistakes early on in life and is now giving back to the younger generation in hopes that his words will influence their future.
Gates spent the better part of his teens and 20's thinking it was all about him. Today, he's a man giving back to his community, in hopes that the city of Detroit will turn out some fine young men, with the knowledge and power to overcome any and all adversity.
All this, on his 30th birthday today! Happy Birthday Antonio! Thanks for being a great role model and mentor!

Since no actual testing goes on at the camp and it's not held at a Division I school, college coaches are allowed to participate. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio, offensive line coach Dan Roushar and defensive line coach Ted Gill were all present at the camp.
The MSU coaches were able to see several of their verbal commitments in action as well as prospects that are on their radar. Detroit Renaissance's Lawrence Thomas and New Baltimore Anchor Bay's Taiwan Jones, both MSU commits, were at the camp. The duo gives MSU one of the most athletic pair of linebackers in the nation.
The list of players at the camp that MSU is actively recruiting is nearly as impressive. Rivals four-star wide receiver DeAnthony Arnett of Saginaw headlines that group. He has narrowed down his list to a final seven and the Spartans are the only in-state team to make the cut.
Rivals top 250 prospect and four-star offensive lineman Aundrey Walker of Cleveland Glenville Academy was also on hand for the camp. Walker has long had the Spartans in his top three, along with Ohio State and USC. The recent NCAA sanctions imposed on the Trojans have probably made it a two-team race.
Several other prospects at the camp that could earn an MSU scholarship in the near future: Corunna offensive lineman Jalen Schlachter and Detroit Southeastern linebacker Ed Davis. Both have multiple BCS-conference scholarship offers.
The camp also featured several players who will be well-known on the recruiting scene next year, including Orchard Lake St. Mary's linebacker James Ross and King running back/defensive back Dennis Norfleet. Both are sure to be prospects that Dantonio and his staff actively recruit for the class of 2012.
